Officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) escaped unhurt after an angry mob attacked them and torched their patrol vehicle at Koza village, near the Maiadua-Kongolam border in Katsina State.
The incident happened around 2130 hours on 3 December 2025 when Customs personnel at the Koza checkpoint attempted to intercept a suspected smuggling vehicle, a Pathfinder jeep travelling from Daura towards the Kongolam border post with Niger Republic.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the driver of the jeep refused to stop for routine checks and sped into Koza village.
In response, residents and suspected sympathisers of the smuggler mobilised, blocked the highway, attacked the pursuing Customs officers, and set ablaze a Volkswagen Golf 3 patrol car belonging to the service
.Additional patrol teams were quickly deployed to the scene, successfully rescuing the officers and restoring calm.No fatalities were recorded, but the burnt vehicle was completely destroyed.
The Nigeria Customs Service has launched an investigation into the incident while reinforcing security along the border axis.
