Akpabio Appeals to S'Court Over Court of Appeal Ruling in Natasha Akpoti's Suspension

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court challenging a November 28, 2025, decision by the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, in a long-running legal dispute involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central.

The case originates from Akpoti-Uduaghan's suspension by the Akpabio-led Senate earlier in 2025, which was later overturned by lower courts.

The specific appeal stems from the Court of Appeal's refusal to allow Akpabio's legal team to rely on a brief of argument that exceeded the prescribed 35-page limit under appellate court rules.

Akpabio argues that the appellate court's decision violated his right to a fair hearing under the 1999 Constitution.

He also contends that the court treated parties unequally, pointing out alleged formatting non-compliance in Akpoti-Uduaghan's brief that went unaddressed.

The notice of appeal seeks to set aside the November 28 proceedings and permit refiling of the brief in compliance with rules.

The dispute has highlighted ongoing tensions in the Senate, with the original suspension linked to plenary altercations and broader allegations.

Akpoti-Uduaghan's team has expressed confidence in the judicial process, describing the Supreme Court move as a final attempt to revisit procedural issues.

The apex court's decision is awaited amid continued national interest in the matter.
