Airtel Africa Partners with Starlink for Direct-to-Cell Service in 14 African Countries

Airtel Africa has struck a major partnership with SpaceX to deploy Starlink's cutting-edge direct-to-cell satellite technology across all 14 of its markets, potentially reaching more than 174 million subscribers and bridging connectivity gaps in remote regions.

The innovative service enables compatible standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites, bypassing the need for ground-based cell towers or additional equipment.

Rollout is slated for 2026, starting with text messaging and limited data access for key applications, ideal for rural and underserved areas where traditional networks fall short.

This makes Airtel Africa the continent's first mobile operator to integrate Starlink's direct-to-cell capabilities, enhancing existing networks and eliminating persistent coverage "dead zones" that have limited digital access, economic opportunities, and emergency services.

The deal extends to Starlink's upcoming broadband direct-to-cell platform, powered by advanced satellites delivering up to 20 times faster data speeds directly to handsets.

Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar commented: “Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell technology complements the terrestrial infrastructure and even reaches areas where deploying terrestrial network solutions are challenging.

We are very excited about the collaboration with Starlink, which will establish a new standard for service availability across all our 14 markets.”

Similar global rollouts include Ukraine's Kyivstar, which launched the service in November 2025 as Europe's first, proving its reliability in challenging conditions.

Subject to regulatory approvals in each country, the initiative could transform access to education, healthcare, farming tools, and disaster response in hard-to-reach communities, advancing Africa's digital future.
