Nigeria's most capped player, Ahmed Musa, has officially retired from international football, ending a remarkable 15-year journey with the Super Eagles.
The former Super Eagles captain made the announcement on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, via a heartfelt statement on social media, expressing gratitude to the nation and reflecting on his achievements.
Musa, who earned 111 caps and holds the record as Nigeria's most appearances international, highlighted key milestones including winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scoring four World Cup goals, making him Nigeria's highest scorer at the tournament with memorable braces against Argentina in 2014 and Iceland in 2018.
In his statement, the 33-year-old said: "After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football... Playing 111 matches for my country is something I hold with deep respect.
"To become the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football is a great honour."
He recounted his early days, being invited simultaneously to the U-20, U-23, and senior teams as a teenager, and always answering the national call without hesitation.
Musa, who captained the team and emphasised leadership through service and support for younger players, added: "Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning. As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude... Thank you, Nigeria. My heart will always beat green."
Currently serving as General Manager of his boyhood club Kano Pillars while also playing, Musa's retirement follows his recent omission from the Super Eagles squad, marking the end of an era for Nigerian football.
Tributes have poured in from former teammates, with William Troost-Ekong calling him a "Legend" and others praising his dedication and legacy.
