ADP Raises Alarm Over US Airstrikes on Nigerian Soil, Demands Clarity on Sovereignty

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has strongly condemned reports of United States airstrikes targeting Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements within Nigerian territory, describing the development as a grave threat to national sovereignty.

In a press release issued on December 26, 2025, the opposition party expressed deep concern that foreign kinetic military action on Nigerian soil raises fundamental constitutional, legal, and sovereignty questions that must not be ignored.

The National Chairman of the ADP, Engr. Yabagi Yusuf Sani, stated: “No government serious about sovereignty should outsource the use of force against its own enemies without full constitutional clarity and democratic oversight.

"Fighting terrorism must not become an excuse for quietly surrendering national authority.”He further warned: “Once foreign jets begin striking targets inside your country, you have crossed from cooperation into dependency. That is a line Nigeria must never cross casually.”

The party highlighted that while Nigeria's historical security cooperation with international partners has traditionally focused on intelligence sharing, training, and logistics, the reported shift to direct foreign airstrikes within Nigeria represents a dangerous escalation.

Citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which places the security and welfare of Nigerians squarely on Nigerian institutions, the ADP argued that such actions do not override constitutional accountability, legislative oversight, or the public's right to transparency.

The ADP further cautioned that any action capable of implying Nigeria is unable or unwilling to secure its own territory risks eroding constitutional order and long-term national interests.

The party called on the Federal Government to immediately provide full clarification on the legal basis, command structure, rules of engagement, civilian-protection safeguards, and the extent of legislative involvement in the reported operation.

It urged authorities to defeat terrorism without compromising sovereignty, accountability, or constitutional governance.

The statement was signed by Dr. Sani Dawop, National Publicity Secretary of the Action Democratic Party (ADP).
