Armed bandits have escalated extortion in rural areas of Tsafe Local Government Area, imposing multimillion-naira levies on vulnerable communities, according to credible sources.
In Danjibga town, bandits demanded ₦8 million from residents, split evenly between ₦4 million as "compensation" for two motorcycles allegedly confiscated by security forces and another ₦4 million for funds they claim were taken by a local youth.
To enforce compliance, the gunmen hijacked a vehicle loaded with 100 bags of soybeans, taking four occupants hostage.
Both the vehicle and captives are being held until the full payment is made, with release promised upon settlement.
The extortion campaign has extended to neighboring villages in the district:
Kagana: ₦4 million
Bare-Bari: ₦4 million
Kurin Ganwa: ₦40 million
These aggressive financial impositions highlight the worsening insecurity in Zamfara State, where bandit groups operate with increasing impunity, targeting defenseless rural populations.
Affected communities are urgently appealing to the Zamfara State Government and federal security agencies for immediate intervention.
Residents warn that without prompt action, the cycle of forced taxation, abductions, and displacement will engulf more areas.
