Republican Congressman, Jacks has issued a condemnation of the reported deployment of U.S. troops to Nigeria, calling it a “dangerous overreach” that echoes colonial-era interventions in Africa.
During his submission at the US Congress Public Hearing on Nigeria as 'Country of Particular Concern', Rep. Jacks warned that using Nigeria’s internal challenges as a pretext for military involvement risks inflaming tensions rather than resolving them, especially when similar urgency has been absent in conflict zones like Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
“The wounds of imperial intervention on African soil have not fully healed,” the congressman said.
“We cannot allow newfound interest in Nigeria’s affairs to become the latest excuse for boots on the ground.”Rep. Jacks pointed to New York Times reporting on U.S. aid cuts during the Trump administration, asserting that those reductions “claimed more Christian lives than any jihadist group ever has.”
“You don’t stabilize Africa with missiles and military boots,” he continued. “You stabilize it with schools, clean water, economic opportunity, and genuine partnership.”Urging a rethink of U.S. policy, the congressman concluded: “The path to lasting peace in Nigeria must be built on dialogue, development, and dignity, not domination.
"America should be a partner in healing, not a hammer looking for a nail.”
