At least two people were shot dead and two others injured when a protest against relentless banditry erupted into violence in Danjanku, Dantashi, and Dayi communities of Malumfashi Local Government Area, Katsina State.
The unrest followed a midnight bandit raid on Monday that killed one resident and abducted 17 others marking the third assault in under a week and pushing total kidnappings in the area beyond 30, despite a standing peace accord with the government.
Eyewitnesses said armed bandits scaled fences in Danjanku, stormed homes, and carried out the abductions.
Furious youths blocked the Funtua–Katsina highway Tuesday morning in a initially peaceful demonstration against insecurity and perceived government inaction.
The situation escalated when security operatives moved to disperse the crowd, allegedly opening fire and killing two protesters while wounding two more.
Residents from Dantashi and Dayi joined in solidarity, burning tires and blocking roads.Calm returned after traditional rulers and elders intervened.
Danjanku Village Head Tanimu Almakiyayi confirmed the attack: “They came last night, killed one of us, and took several others. We live in constant fear.”
A security source corroborated: “Bandits invaded Danjanku, abducted 17, and killed one.”Locals accused deployed soldiers of the fatal shootings and criticized the failed peace deal.
“We still pay taxes to harvest our crops, yet there’s no safety to farm or move,” one resident said. Another added: “They attacked two days ago, returned last night that’s why youths protested. Instead of dialogue, soldiers shot.”Malumfashi and nearby Bakori continue to suffer renewed raids despite the agreement.
Separately, bandits struck a Fulani settlement behind Bakori Local Government Secretariat, killing one policeman, wounding two others, and rustling livestock.
A joint military, police, and vigilante team repelled the assault, neutralizing about nine suspected bandits.Efforts to reach the Katsina Police Public Relations Officer for comment were unsuccessful.
