The Senate has called on the Federal Government to honour the late General Mohammed Abdullahi, former Chief of Staff to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, by naming a national monument or institution after him.
The resolution followed a motion co-sponsored by Senators Lola Ashiru (Kwara South) and Suleiman Sadiq (Kwara North) during Wednesday’s plenary.
Lawmakers praised Abdullahi as an exemplary public servant, disciplined statesman, and patriot who dedicated his life to Nigeria’s stability and progress.
The Senate observed a minute’s silence in his honour, commiserated with Kwara State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation over the “irreparable loss,” and directed its Committees on Defence and National Security to convey formal condolences to the family.
Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro described him as “a perfect gentleman, embodiment of humility, professional and gallant officer, a rare gem, mentor, and patriot.”
Senator Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central) recalled Abdullahi’s pivotal role in stabilizing Nigeria during Obasanjo’s tenure:
“He contributed immensely to the country’s stability from 1999.”Co-sponsor Suleiman Sadiq hailed his discipline and capacity, while Senator Orji Kalu (Abia North) called him “a bridge between governors and the presidency” who always spoke truth to power, even mediating during his own disputes with Obasanjo.
The upper chamber urged the government to immortalise Abdullahi’s legacy through a befitting national tribute.
