Taraba PDP Chairman Resigns, Set to Join APC with Governor Kefas

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba State, Alhaji Abubakar Bawa, has resigned from his position and quit the party barely 24 hours after returning from the controversial PDP national convention in Ibadan.

Sources close to the state executive confirmed on Tuesday that Bawa tendered his resignation letter to the State Working Committee, citing personal reasons, while highly placed party insiders revealed that he is finalising plans to formally defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside Governor Agbu Kefas.

Governor Kefas, who won the 2023 election on the PDP platform, has in recent weeks held series of closed-door meetings with APC national leaders, fueling speculation of an imminent defection.

Neither the governor nor Alhaji Bawa has issued an official statement on the planned move, but a senior government official told journalists that “the governor and the former state chairman will make the announcement at the appropriate time.”

The development marks the latest blow to the PDP in the North-East, coming just days after the party’s disputed convention and amid deepening internal crisis.
