Controversial Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has dismissed speculation that his current trip to Turkey was an escape from potential U.S. military action under President Donald Trump, providing evidence that the journey was scheduled weeks earlier.
The rumors erupted after photos of Gumi in Turkey circulated online, with many netizens linking his travel to Trump’s November 1, 2025, statement warning of intervention against terrorists allegedly targeting Christians in Nigeria.
Social media users accused Gumi, known for past engagements with bandit groups of fleeing to avoid being targeted.
Responding from Turkey, where he continues to grant interviews, Gumi shared documentation on Facebook showing he obtained his Turkish visa on October 16, 2025 – over two weeks before Trump’s statement.
“I got my Turkish visa on the 16th October 2025, and Trump’s irresponsible tweet lying about ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria was on the 1st Nov. 2025,” Gumi wrote.
“Yet, because of melancholy, they concoct lies and believe them. Trump has no power over us; it’s just your sick mind bowing down to him in worship.”
In a follow-up post, he described the “Christian genocide” narrative as part of a broader agenda: “The alleged ‘Christian genocide’ in Nigeria is all about a well-drawn-out plan to attack the Shariah Law and Islamophobia.”
Gumi further claimed the controversy has exposed “unpatriotic, hateful citizens who wish no good for the nation,” adding: “We can’t be deceived anymore.”
He also alleged manipulation of evidence by some groups, stating a doctor informed him that Christians in the Middle Belt are staging fake burials with empty coffins to fabricate mass killing footage.
“Do you know that some Middle Belt Christian groups are now staging fake mass killings? They are burying empty coffins and recording the process as if real victims were killed, just to push the narrative of a Christian genocide,” Gumi wrote.
“This is desperation at its peak. A disgrace.”Warning against trusting such claims, he referenced past statements: “Trump lied before that Israel attacked Iran unilaterally. These people are dangerously deceptive. Continue to trust them at your own peril.”
