The House of Representatives on Tuesday held a special plenary session dedicated to tackling Nigeria's escalating security challenges, admitting a high-level delegation from St. Kitts and Nevis led by Speaker Lanein Blanchette, alongside representatives from the United States Embassy.
The session, convened amid a surge in banditry, kidnappings, and attacks, including the recent abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State brought together lawmakers, foreign dignitaries, and security experts to review threats and bolster legislative responses.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, in his opening remarks, stressed that Nigeria's sovereignty remains non-negotiable but affirmed the value of international partnerships in combating insecurity.
"Security is a shared responsibility. We must be mindful of our utterances and actions as a nation," Abbas said, urging unity and caution against divisive narratives.
Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu highlighted persistent gaps in security implementation, noting that while deterrent laws exist, inadequate funding and poor execution hinder progress.
He called for enhanced resource allocation and oversight mechanisms to support the armed forces and intelligence agencies.
The St. Kitts and Nevis delegation, on a parliamentary exchange visit, expressed solidarity with Nigeria's efforts, with Speaker Blanchette commending the House's proactive approach.
U.S. Embassy representatives reiterated Washington's commitment to collaboration on counter-terrorism and community protection, following recent bilateral discussions.
The plenary, broadcast live on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) concluded with plans for a formal resolution outlining actionable steps, timelines, and monitoring frameworks to drive immediate improvements in national security.
