The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State has called on the National Assembly to urgently amend the Constitution to allow the creation of state police, describing it as the most viable solution to Nigeria’s escalating insecurity.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Akure by party spokesman Steve Otaloro, the APC said rising rural banditry, herdsmen attacks, kidnappings, urban crime and cross-border extremism have exposed the limitations of a centralised police system.
While commending President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to strengthen national security, Otaloro stressed that the Nigeria Police Force cannot effectively cover every community without structured state-level policing.
“Nigeria has entered a new and dangerous phase of insecurity that requires innovative solutions,” he said, adding that national consensus now exists for decentralised policing.
The party proposed that the legislation be named the “Akeredolu State Police Bill” in honour of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, who was one of the earliest and most vocal advocates for state police.
Otaloro praised Akeredolu’s foresight in establishing the Amotekun Corps despite fierce opposition, noting that the regional security outfit has proven the effectiveness of state-backed community policing.
The statement also commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for sustaining and strengthening Amotekun through better training, logistics, welfare and collaboration with federal agencies.
Urging lawmakers to set aside partisan and ethnic considerations, the APC insisted that a comprehensive state police law would reduce pressure on the Nigeria Police Force, boost local intelligence, curb banditry and kidnappings, and allow the federal government to focus on counter-terrorism and border security.
