The Catholic Bishop of Wukari Diocese, Most Rev. Mark Maigida Nzukwein, has condemned the Federal Government’s “disturbing silence” over renewed deadly attacks in southern Taraba State that have claimed at least 70 lives and displaced thousands in recent weeks.
Speaking on Saturday during a thanksgiving Mass in Jalingo for the new Taraba State CAN leadership, Bishop Nzukwein said coordinated attacks allegedly by armed Fulani herdsmen have razed over 1,000 houses and displaced more than 10,000 families in Ussa and Takum local government areas.
He disclosed that the Catholic Church alone has documented the displacement of over 350 communities in the past two months.
Describing the situation as “deeply alarming,” the bishop said Taraba is “at a crossroads of confused identity and ethnic divisions” that continue to fuel violence and stall development.
He urged the newly inaugurated CAN leadership, led by Rev. Fr. Williams Awoshiri, to demand accountability from authorities, work with Christian political office-holders and community leaders, and speak boldly against injusticeions of rising hostility toward Christian identity in the state.
Nzukwein also called for urgent humanitarian aid for displaced families and immediate repairs to the collapsed Namnai Bridge, which has isolated vulnerable communities.
While commending the state government’s support, he criticised both state and federal responses as slow and inadequate.
In his response, CAN Chairman Fr. Awoshiri pledged to prioritise Christian unity and interfaith engagement for lasting peace.
