The National Orientation Agency (NOA) and the National Universities Commission (NUC) have joined forces to introduce a compulsory Citizenship Studies course across all universities in Nigeria.
Director-General of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, formally inaugurated a joint technical committee tasked with developing the curriculum for immediate review and adoption.
Speaking at the inauguration, Issa-Onilu explained that the new university programme is a key component of the Nigerian Identity Project aimed at restoring core national values.
He revealed that the recently launched National Values Charter which clearly spells out the rights, responsibilities, and obligations of citizens will form the bedrock of the curriculum.
Citizenship education is already embedded in the primary and secondary school system; the university-level course will deepen understanding and application among tertiary students.
Representing the NUC Executive Secretary, Florence Uju Onuoha commended the Federal Executive Council for approving the initiative, describing it as a strategic step toward nurturing responsible, patriotic citizens and reinforcing national unity.
The committee is expected to complete and submit the draft curriculum for validation in the coming weeks.
