Hundreds of Nigerians living in Spain staged a peaceful protest outside the Nigerian Embassy in Madrid on Saturday, demanding urgent international intervention over the escalating wave of schoolchildren kidnappings in northern Nigeria.
The demonstration was triggered by last week’s abduction of more than 250 students and teachers from St. Mary Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.
“We are here on behalf of Nigerian Christians who are being killed and abducted daily,” said Christiana Wariboko, President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Spain. “The international community must intervene now.”
The Madrid protest came as distraught parents of the abducted Papiri students gathered at the school premises for the second consecutive day, accusing both state and federal governments of abandoning their children.
Eight days after armed men stormed the school on 21 November and took over 300 pupils and 12 teachers, more than 200 parents converged to register their details as directed by authorities.
