The Nigerian Institute of Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) has officially launched the "NICRAT-AACR Access to Prevention and Treatment (APT) for Cancer Campaign" – a new initiative aimed at boosting early detection and community-based cancer control in the Federal Capital Territory.
The pilot project, launched in partnership with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), will focus on Abuja’s six Area Councils and train 60 frontline health workers in cancer advocacy, screening, and timely referral, with particular emphasis on breast and prostate cancers.
Speaking at the launch, NICRAT highlighted Nigeria’s rising cancer burden and the critical role of early detection, noting that late diagnosis remains a major challenge due to low awareness and limited access to screening services.
The APT for Cancer Campaign seeks to bridge these gaps by building capacity at the community level, increasing public confidence in cancer care services, and ultimately improving treatment outcomes across the country.
