African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has condemned in the strongest possible terms the military coup d’état in Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, during which President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, senior officials, and political leaders were arrested.
In a statement from Addis Ababa, the Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s “zero tolerance” for unconstitutional changes of government, citing the AU Constitutive Act, the Lomé Declaration, the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, and the Ezulwini Framework.
Mr Youssouf stressed that only the National Electoral Commission (CNE) has the authority to announce official election results and endorsed the earlier joint statement by AU, ECOWAS, and West African Elders Forum observation missions.
He demanded the immediate and unconditional release of President Embaló and all detained persons, urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, and called for calm to avoid further escalation.
The AU, he said, stands ready to work with ECOWAS and international partners to restore constitutional order through dialogue and legal means.
Reaffirming the Union’s full solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau, Chairperson Youssouf pledged continued support for peace, stability, and democratic consolidation in the country.
