US rapper, Onika Maraj-Petty, popularly known as Nicki Minaj is set to speak at a United Nations, UN, event in New York this Tuesday to address jihadist violence against Christians in Nigeria.
The hip-hop star would be joined by the US ambassador to the
United Nations, Michael Waltz, and President Donald Trump’s advisor Alex
Bruesewit, who is the convener.
Time senior political correspondent, Eric Cortellessa,
disclosed this via X late Sunday.
Confirming the report, the US envoy to the UN, Michael
Waltz, described Nicki Minaj as “not only arguably the greatest female
recording artist, but also a principled individual who refuses to remain silent
in the face of injustice.”
He added, “I’m grateful she’s leveraging her massive
platform to spotlight the atrocities against Christians in Nigeria.”
Reacting to ambassador Waltz’s post, Minaj said: “I am
grateful to be entrusted with an opportunity of this magnitude. I do not take
it for granted. It means more than you know.”
She emphasised that she would never stand down in the face
of injustice, adding that the influence God has given her has a bigger purpose.
United States President Donald Trump recently alleged that
there is an ongoing Christian genocide in Nigeria and announced that he was
designating the nation a “Country of Particular Concern” and called on members
of Congress to take immediate action.
Nicki Minaj swiftly commended Trump for condemning the
killings of Christians in Nigeria.
The Nigerian government denied claims of religious violence
in the country, saying the insecurity in the country is not religiously
motivated.
Despite the Nigerian government’s rebuttal, the US has
remained keen on the issue.
The upcoming UN event with Nicki Minaj is America’s latest
effort in addressing the alleged Christian persecution in Nigeria.
