Min of Foreign Affairs Meets UK Foreign Secretary to Boost Bilateral Ties


Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, held high-level talks with British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper in London today, reaffirming the deep historical and democratic bonds between the two nations while charting a path toward enhanced security, prosperity, and sustainable development.


The meeting, hosted at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), centered on translating shared values into concrete action across key sectors: trade and investment, security, education, migration, energy transition, and climate action.


Minister Tuggar described the discussions as “forward-looking and results-oriented,” emphasizing Nigeria and the UK’s mutual interest in turning innovation into tangible outcomes. 


“We are united not just by history, but by a vision for a safer, more prosperous future,” he said. 


“Today, we moved beyond rhetoric to actionable commitments.”Key highlights included:Trade & Investment: Exploring increased UK investment in Nigeria’s fast-growing technology and creative industries, with a focus on job creation and digital economy expansion.   

Energy & Climate: Advancing collaboration on renewable energy projects and climate resilience, building on Nigeria’s leadership in the African energy transition.   

Security & Migration: Strengthening intelligence-sharing and joint initiatives to combat transnational threats and manage migration humanely and effectively. 

Education & Innovation: Expanding scholarship programs, research partnerships, and skills development to empower the next generation of leaders.

 

Both sides reviewed progress on existing frameworks, including the UK-Nigeria Development Partnership, while identifying new opportunities to align policy with impact on the ground.


Foreign Secretary Cooper welcomed Nigeria’s growing role in global affairs, stating, “The UK remains a committed partner in Nigeria’s development journey. 


Today’s talks reinforce our shared commitment to security, sustainability, and economic opportunity.”


The meeting signals a renewed push to deepen one of Africa’s most enduring bilateral relationships, with follow-up mechanisms established to track implementation and measure results.
