The Defence Headquarters has launched a thorough investigation into allegations that troops deployed to protect Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, were withdrawn shortly before bandits abducted students last week.
Responding to claims by Governor Nasir Idris that the attackers struck about 30 minutes after the soldiers left the school, Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, confirmed on Sunday that a full review is underway.“
In line with our standard procedure, a thorough review is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding troop deployment and movements in the area at the time of the incident,” Onoja said.
He explained that operational decisions are based on intelligence assessments and the broader security situation in the region, adding that any identified lapses would prompt immediate corrective measures.
Onoja condemned the abduction of no fewer than 25 students from the Kebbi school and the separate kidnapping of 215 pupils and students from St. Mary’s Private Primary and Secondary School in Niger State.
He reassured Nigerians that aggressive operations are ongoing and rescuing the abducted students remains a top priority, with troops actively pursuing all actionable intelligence.
