The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources on Monday commenced a major clearance operation at Tejuosho Market in Yaba, dislodging traders who had encroached on roads, walkways, and setbacks.
The exercise, led by the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), is part of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda to restore order, enhance safety, and maintain environmental standards across the state.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reiterated that public spaces must remain free from illegal structures and obstructions, warning that the ministry will sustain strict enforcement of environmental laws.
Head of Public Affairs, KAI, Ajayi Lukman, told journalists that the agency had received multiple petitions about the traders three months ago and held several meetings with market leaders to vacate the roads.
Despite repeated warnings and advocacy, compliance was not achieved.“They abandoned their shops and turned walkways and road setbacks into trading areas, blocking two out of three lanes and converting the road into an extension of the market,” Lukman said.
He confirmed that market executives later apologised, but stressed that the operation would continue until full compliance is achieved.
Corps Marshal of KAI, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), called on residents to support efforts to keep Lagos clean and habitable, highlighting the health risks posed by open urination, defecation, and improper waste disposal in the area.
Traders affected by the clearance have been directed to operate strictly within designated market spaces.
The state government assured that similar operations will be extended to other areas where illegal street trading and environmental violations persist.
