Kwankwaso to APC Defectors: 'Betrayal Has a Price'

National leader of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has issued a stern warning to politicians who defected from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that they will soon "pay the price of betrayal".

Speaking at his Miller Road residence in Kano on Monday during a solidarity visit from supporters of Kano South Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, the 2023 NNPP presidential candidate affirmed the party's resilience amid national challenges.

"The NNPP will remain firm in the face of oppression and hardship," he stated. The gathering highlighted internal divisions following Senator Sumaila's recent defection back to the APC after winning his seat on the NNPP platform in 2023.

Group leader Sunusi Hukuma distanced his faction from the senator, vowing to oppose Sumaila's future ambitions and support Kwankwaso's preferred candidate in the next election.

"We withdrew our support the moment he abandoned the platform that brought him to the National Assembly," Hukuma declared, leading the crowd in replacing their caps with the red Kwankwasiyya symbol to reaffirm loyalty.

"We shall continue to be loyal to the Kwankwasiyya Movement forever."Kwankwaso praised the group's steadfastness, describing Kwankwasiyya as "a movement for the people and those who reason—not a money-making venture."

He emphasized that the poor no longer need bribes to vote, adding: "Those voted for by the poor, who refused to be bribed, have unfortunately dumped our party after being bribed. I assure you this will not persist. The time of judgment will soon come when they realize their wrong decision. Anyone who betrays the people's trust will pay a price."

Though not naming Sumaila directly, Kwankwaso commended the supporters for resisting defection pressures.

Sumaila had left the APC for NNPP before the 2023 elections, securing the Kano South seat, only to return to APC recently while pledging full support for President Bola Tinubu's agenda in Kano.

The event shows growing tensions within Kano's political landscape as the NNPP seeks to consolidate its base ahead of future polls
