Kano State Government has recruited and deployed no fewer than 1,600 trained watchmen to provide round-the-clock security in public secondary schools across the 44 local government areas of the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf performed the official flag-off of the school security programme in Kano on Tuesday, stating that the watchmen were carefully selected, screened and trained to safeguard school facilities against vandalism, theft and other security threats.
The governor disclosed that the initiative is being funded through the state’s security trust fund and that each watchman will receive a monthly stipend from the government.
“Education remains the bedrock of our development agenda. We cannot allow criminals to destroy school property or create fear in the minds of our children and teachers,” Governor Yusuf said during the event.
He directed the watchmen to work closely with school principals, Parent-Teacher Associations and nearby police formations, stressing that any act of negligence or complicity with criminals would lead to immediate dismissal and prosecution.
The Kano State Commissioner for Education, Haruna Umar Doguwa, confirmed that the deployment has already commenced, with at least three watchmen assigned to larger schools and two to smaller ones depending on need and location.
Education stakeholders, including the state chapter of the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools (ANCOPSS), have commended the governor for the initiative, describing it as a timely response to repeated incidents of burglary and destruction of school property, especially during holidays and weekends.
