A widely circulated video claiming to show armed “Boko Haram” terrorists issuing threats in the South-East has been exposed as staged propaganda, with security sources and analysts pointing fingers at elements linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In the clip, masked individuals speaking Hausa warn of attacks, but experts say the accents, presentation style, and heavy facial coverings bear no resemblance to authentic Boko Haram or ISWAP propaganda videos from the North-East.
“Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters do not hide their faces in this manner, and the accents are completely off,” a senior security analyst monitoring separatist and jihadist media told journalists.
“The entire production screams amateur staging. This is classic disinformation designed to inflame ethnic hatred.”
Multiple sources allege the video was produced by IPOB sympathisers masquerading as Fulani extremists in a deliberate attempt to portray peaceful herder communities as terrorists and bolster unsubstantiated claims of “genocide” against Igbo people.
Community leaders in the South-East and northern pastoralist groups condemned the video, warning that such fabrications are being used to justify hatred, incite violence against Fulani residents, and mislead international observers.
“This is not the first time IPOB and its armed wing ESN have been accused of staging incidents and blaming them on Fulani herders,” a prominent northern leader in the region said.
“False videos like this put innocent lives at risk and poison community relations.”Conflict monitors note that attacks on police stations, enforcement of illegal sit-at-home orders, and targeted killings in the South-East in recent years have overwhelmingly been traced to IPOB/ESN operatives, yet many are routinely attributed to “Fulani herdsmen” in separatist propaganda.
Security agencies have urged the public to desist from sharing unverified content, emphasising that staged propaganda remains a dangerous tool for escalating ethnic tensions and attracting foreign sympathy under false pretences.Investigations into the origin of the video are ongoing.
