JUST IN: Senate proposes death penalty for kidnappers

The Nigerian Senate has adopted a resolution categorizing kidnapping as a form of terrorism and calling for amendments to the Terrorism Act to ensure the strictest punishment is applied.

During Wednesday’s plenary session, senators agreed that any individual convicted of kidnapping should automatically face the death penalty once the law is revised.

The decision reflects growing concerns over the rising rate of abductions in the country and the urgent need for stronger deterrent measures.

“The resolution mandates that, upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced,” the Senate stated.

Lawmakers emphasized that this move is aimed at curbing the menace and sending a strong warning to criminals.

  1. It is one thing to enact laws in Nigeria and it’s another thing to implement them. We all know that some of our judges are so corrupt and incompetent in interpreting these laws so that when they sentence criminals to death penalty, it will serve as a deterrent to young ones who would love to join terrorist cell and make carrier from these atrocities. It is a high time death penalty ought to have been passed. And those supporting them, giving them shelter, politicians, those financing them, giving them weapons and assisting them with security information should all be included in the list of those who should face the same death penalty. We all know that some religious leaders in the North, Imams, traditional leaders, clerics and corrupt and hungry politicians who want power by any means necessary are those instigating those youths into terrorism. They formed them as destroying machines to their country. They must all be punished for their act and support for crimes against humanity.
