Jazzman Olofin calls out Adekunle Gold for sampling his 2004 song

Jazzman Olofin, the Nigerian singer, has called out Adekunle Gold for sampling his 2004 hit ‘Raise Da Roof’ without permission.

On Tuesday, Olofin shared a video on Instagram of Adekunle Gold rehearsing the track with a live band ahead of a London concert.

In the caption, the singer clarified that he takes no issue with a brief, impromptu freestyle of another artiste’s song as a sign of respect.

However, he criticised the “great lengths” taken to meticulously rehearse his “22-year-old monster hit” without any prior communication.

“Wetin dey happen for here? I’ve got no issue with an artiste freestyling another artist’s song on stage for a second as a sign of respect. It’s cool,” he wrote.

“But when you go through great lengths to actually rehearse my 22-year-old monster hit song ‘Raise Da Roof’ with your one-million-man live band in preparation for your show/concert in London, haba.

“I may be a little too old to be singing your generation’s music, but I’m certainly not too old to spend your generation’s money.

“Mr. Adekunle Gold, I’m very much alive and still actively performing. Don’t beat around the bush. Next time, call baba.”

The call-out sparked mixed reactions online, with some commenters arguing that ‘Raise Da Roof’ originally belonged to Fuji legend Adewale Ayuba.

In a detailed follow-up post, Olofin set the record straight on the song’s authorship. He explained that ‘Raise da Roof’ is his original work and not a remix of Ayuba’s song ‘Bubble.’

“Raise da Roof (my song) is NOT a remix of Bubble (Ayuba’s song). ‎I invited Chief Adewale Ayuba to feature on my “Raise da Roof” track and he decided to add a line: “It’s bubbling ko maa bubble” from his previous album titled “Bubble” to the start of “Raise da Roof” chorus,” he wrote.

‎”The rest of the chorus: “Shuku Shuku bambam, Eni to ba wu ko be. Eyin ti jinle pampam throw your hands in the air raise da roof, raise da roof roof roof” was written by me. I wrote the first and second verses. Ayuba and I co-wrote his verse (third verse).

“Now, “Raise da Roof” is not the first song I wrote for Ayuba to feature in, the very first song I wrote and wanted to feature him on actually came out on his album because he said liked song didn’t mind me giving him to record on the album he was working on at that time, so I gave it to him.

“‎Not only did I give it to him and I also featured on the same track (along with my former partner Lexzy Doo of my former group X-Appeal). This track was released on Ayuba’s album titled “Gun Shot”.

“I did a Yoruba rap on the album, it’s on music platforms, anybody, especially those arguing about which track is the first collabo between fuji artiste and hip-hop artiste, can go check it out.”

Olofin disclosed that he entered the music industry first and foremost as a songwriter, a craft he pursued before his singing career.

He described Ayuba’s feature on his track as a “reciprocal action” for the earlier song he had given the Fuji star.

“‎Most of you don’t know, but I actually came into the game first and foremost as a songwriter, not a singer, the singing thing comes secondary,” he added.

“‎So one may say the Ayuba featuring on my track “Raise da Roof” is like some kind of reciprocal action for my giving him the first song I first wrote and also featuring it.

“‎I liked Ayuba’s kind of fuji music because it’s very clean and modern, unlike some other fuji music back then, that was why I approached him when I saw him at Ray Power radio and asked him to feature on my track. We exchanged numbers and I was happy to work with him. The producer OJB Jezreel did a fantastic job on the song too.

‎”It’s sad we don’t have some kind of solid music history platforms where everyone, especially the new generation can go to for adequate and correct information on materials.

“The hustle has gotten everyone out there just grabbing snatching and running away with whatever materials they somehow come across without the knowledge of who inspires who or what belongs to who. But it’s all good.”
