The Federal Government has announced an ambitious plan to erect 4,000 new telecommunication towers nationwide, targeting 20 million Nigerians currently excluded from mobile network coverage.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, made the disclosure on Wednesday at the Digital Nigeria International Conference 2025 in Abuja.
Speaking during a keynote session, Tijani revealed that the tower rollout is a flagship component of a World Bank-backed broadband expansion programme that will also deploy 90,000 kilometres of open-access fibre optic infrastructure the largest such initiative in any developing economy.
“The project has received full approval under the National Assembly’s borrowing plan,” Tijani stated, emphasising the government’s resolve to foster a digitally inclusive economy and close the connectivity divide in rural and underserved areas.
He highlighted the rapid growth of Nigeria’s digital sector, noting that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) now contributes approximately 19 per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)—a share projected to soon eclipse the oil and gas sector.
“Nigeria’s tech ecosystem is a continental powerhouse, home to five of Africa’s nine unicorns startups valued at over $1 billion each, thanks to deliberate policy reforms and private-sector innovation,” the minister added. In his remarks, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Dr. Kashifu Abdullahi, praised the administration’s focus on youth empowerment and digital inclusion.
He said the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda places digital transformation at the heart of economic diversification, job creation, and inclusive growth.
The broadband and tower initiative is expected to unlock new opportunities in education, healthcare, agriculture, and e-commerce for millions in remote communities, further solidifying Nigeria’s position as Africa’s digital frontier.
