The Department of State Services (DSS) has summoned prominent opposition figure Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed for questioning.
The invitation, issued late Friday, targets what authorities describe as a pattern of "sustained public remarks deemed inciting and capable of undermining national stability."
Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate for the Labour Party under Peter Obi and founder of Baze University in Abuja, has long been a vocal critic of President Bola Tinubu's administration.
Security sources, speaking anonymously, pointed to a recent national television appearance where Baba-Ahmed reportedly blamed the judiciary and military for enabling Tinubu's inauguration, alleging it "emboldened" certain elements to publicly insult security forces.
"He even went as far as inciting the military, claiming that President Tinubu’s swearing-in is what now emboldens them to ‘look you in the face and call you bloody fools,’” one operative told reporters, emphasizing the remarks' potential to erode trust in state institutions.
The summons aligns with broader DSS efforts to curb narratives perceived as destabilizing amid Nigeria's economic hardships, including soaring inflation and insecurity in the north.
Officials clarified that the invitation is preventive rather than punitive, aimed at clarifying Baba-Ahmed's intentions and discouraging rhetoric that could "agitate public sentiment" or weaken confidence in government reforms, such as recent security enhancements dismissed by the politician as a "joke."
Baba-Ahmed, a former federal lawmaker from Kaduna State, has not yet publicly responded to the summons as of Saturday morning.
His allies in the Labour Party have decried the action as an attempt to silence dissent, drawing parallels to past detentions of opposition voices under the current administration.
