Anglican Church Condemns Killing of Venerable Edwin Achi

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has strongly condemned the brutal murder of Venerable Edwin Achi, Archdeacon of Gidanwaya in the Diocese of Kaduna, who was killed by his abductors after more than one month in captivity.

In a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Primate of All Nigeria, the Most Rev. Dr. Henry Chukwudum Ndukuba, the Church described the killing as “a tragic and senseless loss” and “a direct assault on the conscience of the nation.”

The Primate expressed deep anguish over the persistent targeting of clergy and innocent citizens, stating: “The blood of the innocent cries out for justice. This barbaric act must not go unpunished.”

The Anglican Communion urged the Federal Government, security agencies, and Nigeria’s international partners to swiftly identify, arrest, and prosecute not only the perpetrators but also the sponsors and enablers of attacks on clergy and vulnerable communities.

The Church further appealed for the immediate and unconditional release of Venerable Achi’s wife, Mildred, and their daughter, who were abducted with him on October 27, 2025, and are still being held despite the payment of ransom and the priest’s subsequent murder.

While calling for intensified efforts to end the wave of kidnapping and banditry across the country, the Anglican leadership offered prayers for divine comfort for the bereaved family, the Diocese of Kaduna, and healing for the nation.

“The Church stands in solidarity with all victims of violence and will continue to speak truth to power until peace and justice prevail,” the statement concluded.

The killing has triggered widespread outrage and renewed demands for decisive government action against insecurity in northern Nigeria.
