The Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has adjourned the physical forensic inspection of a mobile phone belonging to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele to January 5 and 8, 2026.
Justice Rahman Oshodi fixed the new dates on Friday after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) insisted that the examination of the digital device, tagged Exhibit I, must be conducted in an environment completely disconnected from the internet to preserve the integrity and chain of custody of the evidence.
The court had earlier ordered that Emefiele’s phone remain in its custody throughout the trial.
The forensic process will involve screen-mirroring the contents of the device in the presence of the court registrar, counsel for the prosecution and defence, and an independent certified digital forensic expert.
Emefiele is standing trial on a 19-count charge bordering on corrupt gratification, corrupt demands, and abuse of office during his tenure as CBN Governor.
His co-defendant, Henry Isioma-Omoile, faces three additional counts of accepting gifts by an agent in breach of the law.
The case was adjourned to the 2026 dates to allow the strict offline forensic examination to proceed as directed by the court.
