The Benue State House of Assembly on Tuesday extended the suspension of former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Hyacinth Dajoh (APC-Gboko West), by another six months for alleged continued anti-house activities and failure to show remorse.
The decision followed a motion titled “Motion to Review the Suspension of Hyacinth Dajoh from Legislative Duties,” moved by Mr Terna Shimawua (APC-Kyan) and unanimously adopted during plenary.
Dajoh was first suspended on 26 August for three months after he was accused of leading an impeachment plot against Governor Hyacinth Alia.
Moving the motion, Shimawua told the House that the embattled former Speaker had, during the initial suspension, reportedly teamed up with ex-Majority Leader Saater Tiseer (APC-Mbagwa) and former Minority Leader Michael Audu (PDP-Adoka-Ugboju) to orchestrate a fresh plan to remove the current Speaker, Chief Alfred Emberga.
“The conduct of the former Speaker is unbecoming of a leader who is expected to demonstrate sportsmanship and respect for the institution, especially after a leadership change,” Shimawua said.
The motion, seconded by Mr Simon Gabo (APC-Mata), received overwhelming support from members.Ruling on the motion, Speaker Alfred Emberga stressed the need to protect the sanctity of the legislature, declaring: “No individual is bigger than the institution.”
He directed that, upon the expiration of the new six-month suspension (effective 25 November 2025), Dajoh must submit a formal written apology and demonstrate genuine remorse before he can be readmitted to the House.
The latest sanction further prolongs the political crisis that has rocked the Benue Assembly since the controversial leadership change earlier this year.
