Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has assured Nigerians that a political solution is being actively pursued to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), following his conviction and life imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism charges.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Deputy Speaker expressed strong optimism that President Bola Tinubu will positively respond to appeals from prominent Igbo leaders and stakeholders seeking clemency for the IPOB leader.
“With the legal process now concluded, the earlier constraint of sub judice no longer applies,” Kalu said.“
It is now time to explore political solutions that had been hindered because the matter was before the court.
Now that the court has delivered its judgment, we can intensify our requests for presidential intervention and we are confident the President is open to it.
”Kalu urged South-East residents and Nigerians at large to remain calm and patient, stressing that “all hope is not lost.”
“We are going to get it. Our people should remain calm,” he added.
The Deputy Speaker’s intervention comes amid heightened calls from South-East political, traditional, and religious leaders for the Federal Government to consider a non-judicial resolution in the interest of lasting peace in the region.
