Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will on Monday, 24 November 2025, formally defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and collect his membership card, putting to rest months of speculation about his commitment to the party.
Multiple sources close to the Waziri Adamawa confirmed to Daily Trust that all arrangements have been finalised for the registration exercise to take place at his Jada Ward 1 polling unit in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa Stat
Atiku dropped a strong hint during a closed-door meeting with the Adamawa State leadership of the ADC in Yola on Sunday, telling party officials and supporters:
“There is a new political movement in Nigeria today. That movement has brought us to the ADC. So, the people of Adamawa and Nigeria, our new party is the ADC.”
Addressing the gathering, he declared: “Tomorrow, Monday, in sha Allah, I will officially become a member of the ADC. Before now, I was not inside; you were there before me. Will you accept me?” The crowd responded with a thunderous “Yes!”
The former Vice President’s impending registration ends weeks of uncertainty surrounding his alignment with the opposition coalition he co-chairs with 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The coalition had in July adopted the ADC as its platform for the 2027 presidential election, but the absence of both Atiku and Obi at the recent unveiling of the party’s new national secretariat in Abuja had sparked doubts about their full commitment.
With Atiku now taking the decisive step of formal registration in his home state, attention is expected to shift to Peter Obi and whether the former Anambra governor will also officially join the ADC in the coming days.
