We Did Not Sign Reconciliation Agreement, PENGASSAN Says After Halting Strike

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has clarified that it did not sign the communiqué that led to the suspension of its recent nationwide strike against Dangote Refinery, despite government intervention to resolve the dispute.

PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo made the disclosure during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Thursday, emphasizing that the document presented at the reconciliation meeting was not a formal agreement.

The union suspended the strike on Wednesday in Abuja out of respect for the Federal Government and Nigerians, following marathon negotiations involving the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the National Security Adviser, and other stakeholders.

The strike, which disrupted oil and gas operations including barricades at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited headquarters, stemmed from the dismissal of over 800 workers at Dangote Refinery for joining PENGASSAN, amid allegations of anti-labour practices and sabotage by the company.

Osifo noted unresolved "grey areas" in the resolution, particularly the failure to fully address the reinstatement of sacked workers, and warned that the union could resume the action without notice if commitments are not honored.

Prior meetings, including one that ended in deadlock after nine hours, were convened by Minister of Labour Muhammad Dingyadi to avert economic fallout from the industrial action in Nigeria's critical petroleum sector.

Despite the suspension, PENGASSAN stressed that its patience should not be mistaken for weakness, urging close monitoring of Dangote's compliance.
