U.S Based Igbo Professionals Slam Sowore, Atiku Over Planned Nnamdi Kanu Protest

A U.S.-based coalition of Igbo professionals and businessmen, Njiko Amaka, has condemned a planned October 20 protest demanding the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, accusing 2023 presidential candidates Omoyele Sowore and Atiku Abubakar of exploiting the issue for political gain.

In a statement issued Tuesday, signed by Chairman Chief Emeka Ejidike and Secretary Chief Okey Anosike, the group warned that the protest could disrupt the ongoing judicial process in Kanu’s trial.

Njiko Amaka criticized Sowore and Atiku, alleging they are using Kanu’s detention to regain political relevance after electoral losses. “Sowore’s sudden interest in leading a protest for Kanu, while facing his own criminal charges, raises questions,” the statement read, referencing Sowore’s legal issues over derogatory remarks against President Bola Tinubu.

It also questioned Atiku’s selective advocacy, noting his silence on Mohammed Usman (Khalid al-Barnawi), a detained northerner linked to the 2011 UN bombing, while championing Kanu’s cause.

Citing an Igbo proverb about a tortoise demanding hasty release after years in captivity, the group argued that protests could jeopardize the “steady judicial progress” in Kanu’s case.

They emphasized ongoing political efforts by Igbo leaders, including Governor Peter Mbah’s assurance of a political solution, and urged Nigerians to reject the protest as a self-serving attempt to undermine peace.

“We advise all well-meaning Nigerians to avoid these fifth columnists like a plague,” the statement concluded.
