National Assembly to Finalise Electoral Act Amendment by December

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) revealed that the ongoing amendment to the Electoral Act 2022 is set to be finalized by December 2025, ensuring its application in the 2027 general elections.

The announcement followed Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s reading of President Bola Tinubu’s request to confirm Prof Joash Amupitan (SAN) as the new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, succeeding Prof Mahmood Yakubu after the Council of State approved his appointment.

Bamidele clarified that the delay in signing the previous electoral amendment under former President Muhammadu Buhari stemmed from its late transmission by the National Assembly, which was deemed too close to the election period.

He emphasized that the current timeline would prevent such issues, stating, “Between now and December 2025, we will ensure the Electoral Act amendment is concluded, well ahead of the 2027 elections.”

However, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) strongly opposed a proposed amendment to shift the 2027 elections to November 2026.

In a statement by ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, the party argued that advancing the election date would create a continuous campaign cycle, shorten governance periods, disrupt development planning, and weaken institutional focus.

The ADC urged lawmakers to prioritize genuine electoral and judicial reforms to ensure credible elections and timely dispute resolution without destabilizing governance.

The party’s statement read, “While the intent is to allow more time for resolving election petitions, this amendment risks creating deeper problems for Nigeria’s democracy than it seeks to solve.”
