As part of his 60th birthday celebrations, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Tajudeen, has funded the registration fees for 100 inmates to take the 2025 NABTEB and NECO examinations.
Of these, 57 inmates will sit for NABTEB, while 43 will take NECO.Urging low-key celebrations, Abbas emphasized redirecting goodwill toward humanitarian efforts. He also donated food items worth millions of naira to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and inmates at Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja.
Represented by his Deputy Chief of Staff (Legislative), Dr. Chamberlain Dunkwu, at a presentation ceremony on Tuesday, Abbas reaffirmed his commitment to policies promoting education, justice, and opportunities for all Nigerians, including those in correctional facilities.
“This celebration is about extending hope, giving second chances, and investing in the future of our brothers and sisters who, though confined today, still carry potential for greatness,” he said.
“Registering inmates for NABTEB and NECO is a statement of faith in human dignity and redemption.”
Moved by the story of Chikwendu Hart, an inmate pursuing a doctorate at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and author of seven books while awaiting trial for 13 years, Dunkwu personally donated ₦1 million to him.
On Wednesday, Abbas secured the release of nine inmates from Zaria Medium Correctional Centre by paying over ₦3 million in bail bonds for Ibrahim Dan’asabe (₦240,000), Kabir Ibrahim (₦180,000), Ibrahim Ahmed (₦60,000), Haruna Musa (₦350,000), Aliyu Tukur (₦390,000), Prince Wadilor Wodu (₦326,000), Mustapha Abubakar (₦410,000), Sagir Sani (₦685,000), and Shehu Abubakar (₦440,000).
Abbas also donated over 1,000 bags of rice to IDPs at Kabusa Camp. His wife, Hajia Fatima Abbas-Tajudeen, contributed ₦2 million, while Dunkwu and Deputy Chief of Staff (Administration), Alhaji Ilyasu Balarabe, each donated ₦1 million.
Hon. Chike Okafor, Chairman of the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, also donated ₦1 million, describing Abbas as “a national asset.”
Nizamiye Hospital Abuja provided free healthcare services to IDPs during the event. Addressing the IDPs through Dunkwu, Abbas said the occasion was about “extending compassion, solidarity, and hope” to those displaced.
“Leadership is not only about legislation but also about love, empathy, and service to humanity,” he added, assuring that the House remains committed to protecting the vulnerable and restoring dignity.
Abbas praised the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs, and stakeholders for their support, noting their efforts ensure lasting impact.
He dedicated his milestone to serving humanity and the nation, emphasizing that no Nigerian should feel forgotten.
Hajia Fatima described Abbas as a patriotic leader, supportive husband, and exceptional philanthropist, adding, “I count myself the luckiest woman to have him as a husband. He is a perfect gentleman.”
