Renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and former lawmaker Usman Bugaje have delivered a scathing critique of Nigeria’s political class, accusing the nation’s political parties of obstructing progress six decades after independence.
Speaking at a public discourse aired on News Central and monitored via X, the duo highlighted how the absence of visionary leadership and clear ideological frameworks has perpetuated Nigeria’s governance challenges.
Falana and Bugaje argued that, despite Nigeria’s wealth of human and natural resources, both ruling and opposition parties have consistently prioritized personal and sectional interests over the collective good.
This, they said, has trapped the country in a relentless cycle of underdevelopment, marked by weak institutions and eroded public trust.
“Our political parties lack the ideological clarity needed to drive national progress,” Bugaje stated, while Falana decried their “self-serving agendas” as a betrayal of Nigeria’s potential.
The speakers called for sweeping reforms to overhaul political institutions, urging parties to adopt coherent policies that address the nation’s pressing needs.
They emphasized that rebuilding citizens’ confidence in governance requires a shift from divisive politics to a unified focus on development.
