Doctors Extract 29 Spoons, 19 Toothbrushes, Pens from Man's Stomach in India

In a bizarre and alarming medical case, surgeons in Hapur, India, successfully removed an astonishing array of swallowed objects—29 steel spoons, 19 toothbrushes, and two pens—from the stomach of a man from nearby Bulandshahr, highlighting the desperate consequences of untreated distress in rehabilitation settings.

The patient, who had been admitted to a de-addiction center in Ghaziabad about a month earlier for substance abuse issues, was rushed to the hospital complaining of intense abdominal pain.

An ultrasound scan revealed a shocking collection of metallic items lodged in his stomach, necessitating an immediate emergency surgery led by Dr. Shyam Kumar.

"The surgery was as complex as it was rare," the medical team reported. "An ultrasound scan revealed multiple metallic objects inside the man’s stomach, leaving doctors with no choice but to operate immediately. The team had to carefully remove the items one by one to prevent injury to vital organs."

Dr. Kumar described the discovery as "shocking" due to the sheer volume of foreign objects. "Despite the risks, the operation was successful," he added, praising the precision required to avoid damage to surrounding tissues.

Post-surgery, the patient confided in doctors about his motivations, revealing a heartbreaking story of frustration at the rehab facility.

"He said he had felt mistreated and deprived of food at the de-addiction centre, which left him angry and helpless," according to the report.

"In his agitation, he began swallowing objects to harm himself, a desperate act of self-injury."

The man has since been discharged and is reported to be stable and recovering, though the incident emphasizes the urgent need for better mental health support in addiction recovery programs.
