The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State has set its sights on capturing the governorship in the 2027 elections, with Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, leading the charge.
Speaking at a recent APC rally in Umuahia, Kalu declared that the party would oust the incumbent Labour Party (LP) Governor, Alex Otti, accusing him of underperforming despite significant federal allocations.
“Otti hasn’t done enough for Abians; he has failed,” Kalu asserted, positioning himself as a champion for the people.
He vowed to hold the state government accountable, emphasizing that the APC’s planned takeover would reflect the will of Abia residents rather than external influence.
Kalu highlighted federal initiatives under President Bola Tinubu, such as a proposed South-East seaport, as evidence of APC’s commitment to the state’s development.
The bold declaration has intensified political tensions in Abia, with LP supporters and prominent figures like Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, slamming Kalu’s remarks as out of touch.
Ejiofor predicted that Kalu’s own re-election bid could falter. Meanwhile, Governor Otti, responding to similar comments from Kalu in August 2024, dismissed the APC’s ambitions as premature, stating that only God determines electoral outcomes.
The APC’s aggressive mobilization signals a heated battle ahead in Abia’s political landscape, as the party seeks to challenge Otti’s administration, which has focused on infrastructure and economic reforms since taking office.
With 2027 approaching, both sides are gearing up for a fierce contest to win the hearts of Abians.
