Nigeria Champions South-South Cooperation at FAO Dialogue in Rome

Nigeria has renewed its pledge to strengthen South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) to revolutionize agrifood systems and foster sustainable development across the Global South.

At the World Food Forum’s Ministerial Dialogue in Rome on October 18, 2025, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, stressed on the pivotal role of SSTC in advancing agricultural innovation and food security.

The dialogue, themed “SSTC as a Catalyst for Agrifood System Transformation,” brought together ministers from developing nations to exchange insights and strategies.

Kyari showcased Nigeria’s fruitful collaborations with FAO and China, which have driven technology transfers, farmer training, aquaculture expansion, and the establishment of Regional Multi-Service Extension Centres.

He outlined Nigeria’s priorities, including bolstering institutions, securing sustainable financing, and promoting technology and knowledge exchange to enhance climate-smart agriculture, irrigation, mechanization, and digital solutions.

Kyari also highlighted Nigeria’s leadership within ECOWAS to foster regional agricultural trade and policy harmonization.“Partnerships with nations like China and Brazil demonstrate the Global South’s ability to tackle its challenges collaboratively,” Kyari stated.

FAO Director-General Dr. Qu Dongyu commended Nigeria’s contributions and called for robust institutional frameworks and increased investments to advance SSTC.

The dialogue concluded with a collective resolve to enhance policy coordination, expand funding, and deepen knowledge sharing to build a resilient global agrifood system.
