Lebanon Grants Hannibal Gaddafi $11M Bail After Decade in Detention

A Lebanese judge has ordered the release of Hannibal Gaddafi, son of former Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi, on $11 million bail after nearly 10 years of pre-trial detention, while imposing a travel ban, a judicial official confirmed on October 17, 2025.

Gaddafi was arrested in Lebanon in 2015, accused of withholding information about the 1978 disappearance of Lebanese Shiite cleric Mussa Sadr, founder of the Amal movement, who vanished during a visit to Libya with an aide and a journalist.

Beirut has long attributed the incident to Moammar Gaddafi, who was ousted and killed in 2011.Hannibal’s lawyer, Laurent Bayon, called the bail decision “totally unacceptable” in a case of alleged arbitrary detention, noting that Gaddafi, under international sanctions, cannot afford the $11 million sum.

Bayon announced plans to challenge the ruling and highlighted Gaddafi’s deteriorating health, including severe depression and recent hospitalization for abdominal pain.

Gaddafi, married to a Lebanese model, fled to Syria before being kidnapped by armed men in December 2015 and brought to Lebanon for arrest.

In August 2025, Human Rights Watch called for his immediate release, arguing his detention was based on “apparently unsubstantiated allegations” regarding Sadr’s case.

Nabih Berri, current head of the Amal movement and Lebanon’s parliament speaker, has accused Libya’s new authorities of failing to cooperate on resolving Sadr’s disappearance, a claim Libya rejects.

The case continues to stir diplomatic and legal tensions
