Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has been unveiled as the new leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, a development hailed by Vice President Kashim Shettima as a strategic boost to the party's influence in the South-East region, following Mbah's high-profile defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday.
The announcement came during a special APC stakeholders' meeting in Enugu on Tuesday, where Mbah, who defected alongside a bloc of over 80% of PDP executives, lawmakers, local government chairmen, and political appointees, was formally endorsed as the party's state leader.
This positions him to steer APC's agenda in Enugu, aligning the state's development initiatives with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope blueprint.
Vice President Shettima, speaking virtually at the event, praised Mbah's leadership and the defection's timing.
"Governor Mbah has transformed Enugu from a sleepy town into a hub of economic vibrancy and progress. His emergence as APC leader in Enugu anchors our Renewed Hope Agenda in the South-East, ensuring the region's voice is amplified at the national level," Shettima stated.
He emphasized the move's potential to bridge infrastructure gaps, combat erosion, and foster inclusive growth, drawing from Mbah's track record of boosting the state's internally generated revenue by over 1,000% since assuming office in 2023.
Mbah, addressing the gathering flanked by his predecessor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and federal lawmakers, described the transition as a "disruptive partnership for prosperity."
He lamented the PDP's disregard for South-East interests despite the zone's loyalty, citing it as a key factor in the mass defection.
"This is not just a party switch; it's a commitment to visionary governance. With APC's platform, Enugu's transformation will accelerate, delivering water, roads, and jobs to our people," Mbah said.
The defection, first rumored last week, led to the APC's dissolution of its Enugu state executive committee to accommodate the influx.
