A landmark peace accord was signed on October 12, 2025, between representatives of communities in Bakori, Kafur, Malumfashi, Kankara, and Funtua Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Katsina State and bandit leaders operating in the Funtua zone, marking a significant step toward restoring peace in a region plagued by violence.
The dialogue, held under the Operation Safe Corridor initiative at Kakumi Village in Bakori LGA, ran from 2:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. and was closely monitored to ensure a secure environment.
The meeting brought together traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and representatives of the bandit groups, fostering a collaborative effort to end hostilities.
Community representatives included Alhaji Abdurrahman Kandarawa (Bakori), Abubakar Musa Barde (Kafur), Alhaji Bature Dan Kanjiba (Malumfashi), Alhaji Audu Goya (Funtua), and Alhaji Kasimu Dantsoho (Kankara).
Traditional leaders present were Alhaji Ado Bello (District Head of Bakori), Tsiga Jarman Katsina, Galadiman Katsina Alhaji Abdullahi Mahuta (Malumfashi), Danejen Katsina Alhaji Abdulkadir (Kafur), and Sarkin Maskan Katsina (Funtua).
Representing the bandit groups were Ado Aleru from Yankuzo, Tsafe LGA, Zamfara State; Isiya Kwashen Garwa of Guga Ward, Bakori LGA; Babaro of Gidan Gamji, Kankara LGA; and Alhaji Iliya Zango Dan Sabau from Kankara LGA.
The accord’s resolutions focus on restoring law and order, halting all forms of violence, and fostering mutual respect to ensure peaceful coexistence between the communities and repentant bandit groups.
All parties pledged to uphold the agreement, which aims to stabilize the region and allow residents to resume normal activities like farming and trade, severely disrupted by years of banditry.
The initiative aligns with Katsina State’s broader efforts to curb insecurity, building on Governor Dikko Radda’s strategy of combining dialogue with security measures.
While similar accords have shown mixed results, with some leading to temporary relief but others failing due to lack of enforcement, this agreement is bolstered by the involvement of high-level stakeholders and a commitment to ongoing monitoring.
Local communities expressed hope that the accord will reduce abductions and attacks, though many urged authorities to ensure compliance through sustained security presence and rehabilitation programs for former bandits.
