The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has called off its proposed nationwide strike after the federal government took steps to meet the union’s demands, ASUP President Shammah Kpanja announced on Sunday.
The decision follows ASUP’s 115th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on October 9, which reviewed the government’s response to a 21-day ultimatum issued on August 15.
The union had threatened industrial action over unpaid salary arrears, delayed salary adjustments, non-release of promotion arrears, and the stalled renegotiation of the ASUP/FGN agreement.
Kpanja highlighted progress, including the release of a circular on Peculiar Academic Allowances by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, advancements in the 2025 NEEDS Assessment intervention cycle, and resumed meetings of the Polytechnic Implementation Monitoring Committee.
He also noted the reconstitution of the Federal Government Renegotiation Committee to include the polytechnic sector and efforts to address issues at Federal Polytechnics in Nekede and Ekowe.
ASUP welcomed the government’s commitment to releasing arrears for the 25% and 35% salary adjustments and promotion arrears.
“Our NEC has resolved to suspend the planned strike to allow the government time to complete ongoing actions,” Kpanja stated, adding that the union will reassess the situation in six weeks.
Kpanja praised the Federal Ministry of Education, along with the education and deputy education ministers, for their engagement in resolving the issues.
