Kano, Katsina, Jigawa Unveil ₦50 Billion Joint Electricity Market

Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa states have partnered to create Nigeria’s first regional electricity market, committing ₦50 billion to boost power production and expand access to millions across the region.

The initiative, unveiled after a summit in Marrakech, Morocco, from October 16-19, 2025, marks a pioneering collaboration between state governments and private investors, leveraging the 2023 Electricity Act to enable states to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently.

The agreement grants the three states ownership stakes in Future Energies Africa (FEA), the primary investor in Kano Electricity Distribution Company (Kano DisCo).

This partnership aligns local priorities with the utility’s performance and reform goals. Governors Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano), Dikko Umar Radda (Katsina), and Umar Namadi (Jigawa), alongside energy regulators and international consultants, finalized the deal at the Marrakech Electrification Summit.

Sani Sani, Kano DisCo’s head of corporate communications, emphasized that the collaboration will reduce residential power losses, improving electricity supply across the states.

“FEA and state representatives will hold annual international retreats and quarterly meetings to track progress and guide the tri-state electricity market,” he said.

The ₦50 billion fund, a public-private partnership, will prioritize renewable energy, embedded generation, solar home systems, and mini-grids to enhance power access for households and small businesses across the region’s 40 million residents.

Initial efforts will target rural areas and industrial zones, including Sharada and Bompai in Kano, Dutsin-Ma in Katsina, and Gumel in Jigawa, aiming to transform the region’s energy landscape.
