INEC Hosts EU Election Observers to Review Progress on 2023 Electoral Reforms

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, welcomed a delegation from the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) at its Abuja headquarters on Thursday, October 2.

The visit, led by Chief Observer and European Parliament Member Barry Andrews, focused on assessing Nigeria’s progress in implementing electoral reforms recommended after the 2023 general elections, according to a post on INEC’s official X handle.

Andrews praised INEC’s cooperation and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process, noting “significant improvements” in several areas since the last elections.

However, he highlighted persistent challenges, particularly those requiring judicial and constitutional changes.

“Our mission is to evaluate how far Nigeria has come in addressing these recommendations,” Andrews stated, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts to enhance electoral integrity.

The EU EOM’s follow-up visit underscores ongoing international support for Nigeria’s democratic reforms, as INEC works to address shortcomings and build public trust ahead of future elections.

The commission reaffirmed its dedication to transparent and credible electoral processes, with Yakubu pledging continued collaboration with stakeholders to tackle remaining hurdles.
