Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has lauded President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly for their pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s policing system through the passage and signing of the Police Institutes Establishment Bill and the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
In a statement released on Monday by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, Egbetokun described the legislation as a transformative milestone in the quest for modern, professional policing.
“This is a historic stride toward a more accountable and well-equipped Nigeria Police Force,” Egbetokun declared.
“These laws provide a robust legal foundation to address longstanding challenges and align our operations with global standards.”
He emphasized that the reforms mark a significant leap in enhancing professionalism, securing sustainable funding, and improving welfare for police personnel across the country.
The Police Institutes Establishment Act consolidates and modernizes all police training and research institutions nationwide, expanding their academic scope and aligning curricula with international best practices in law enforcement, investigation, technology, and community policing.
“This Act empowers the Force to streamline professional training and better prepare officers for the complexities of modern policing,” Egbetokun noted.
The legislation is expected to foster a new generation of disciplined, world-class officers equipped to tackle Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
The Nigeria Police Trust Fund (Amendment) Act, meanwhile, strengthens the Force’s financial and administrative framework, ensuring greater transparency and sustainability.
“This law guarantees consistent funding for operations, logistics, training, equipment, and welfare—key areas that have historically constrained our capacity,” Egbetokun said.
The amendment addresses decades-long issues, such as inadequate infrastructure and poor officer welfare, paving the way for a more motivated and citizen-focused police force.Egbetokun hailed the reforms as a “victory for national security, professionalism, and public trust,” underscoring their potential to reshape public perception of the Nigeria Police Force.
“These laws are a testament to President Tinubu’s commitment to building a safer Nigeria and the National Assembly’s dedication to supporting critical reforms,” he added.
The IGP assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to leveraging the new legal framework to drive ongoing reforms, elevate training standards, and deliver service that prioritizes public safety and trust.
