The National Governors Forum (NGF) has thrown its weight behind a bill proposing reserved constituencies for women in Nigeria’s National and State Assemblies, aimed at boosting female representation in governance.
The pledge was announced in a statement issued early Friday, October 24, 2025, following the governors’ meeting in Abuja.
The bill, set for a vote in the National Assembly, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to create special constituencies exclusively contested by women, providing a temporary measure to enhance women’s participation in political leadership.
The NGF urged its members to actively lobby federal and state lawmakers to ensure the legislation’s passage, emphasizing its potential to promote gender equity in governance.
In addition to supporting the bill, the governors commended the Federal Government’s fiscal policies, particularly those led by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for their efforts in stabilizing the nation’s economy.
They expressed their commitment to deepening collaboration with federal authorities to sustain these economic measures.
The NGF also reaffirmed its resolve to address Nigeria’s escalating security challenges, pledging closer cooperation with the Department of State Services (DSS) to tackle emerging threats and strengthen national security.
